What is TOO MUCH swinging for a baby? Mine likes it for hours and sleeps though it?

My 5 week old baby can swing for 3 hours and sleeps through it... as soon as I turn it off, he wakes up and starts crying. The second I turn it back on, he's happy. Is that too much swinging?

  1. no, its fine. i would say, wait for 30 min after he is asleep and then turn it off, so he is in deep sleep and doesn't notice it.
  2. You seem to have gotten him into the rocking motion as a sleep habit and you may have trouble breaking it. I would work on it now, cause when he is 18 pounds and out grown the swing, i dont think you are gonna wanna be rocking him to sleep every day and night. Its not bad to swing, its just a bad habit.
  3. yes you have already started a bad habbit. try to swing your baby less each day.
  4. My daughter was exactly the same...she eventually grew out of the swing at about 6 months but up until then she LOVED it and NEVER wanted out of it...I wouldn't worry about it too much. My daughter is 7 now and perfectly fine even though she spent so much time in her swing.
  5. Him being five weeks, no. But you SHOULD try to get him out every two-three hours for a feeding. My son at that age I literally had to wake up every time to eat. But if he doesn't seem interested, let him swing. But be sure when he gets a lil more alert and awake to start cutting his swinging time down because what's gonna happen when he gets to big for it?
  6. I don't know about the swinging bit but I'd be careful about always letting him sleep in the swing as you could end up with a problem later when you want him to settle well in his cot through the day. Refer to the manufacturers guidelines for what is an appropriate amount of swinging for a little one.
  7. I would be a little worried about the baby spending so many hours on his back in one position....whether it is a swing or a carseat or a bouncer. That is how babies get flat heads and end up wearing helmets later on to reshape them. Have you tried swaddling really tight? That way you can turn him on his side at times during the day and rotate the way he sleeps. And don't forget tummy time. Also, it is really good to "wear" your babies at this age. Baby carriers like Baby Bjorn and baby slings are great and give the baby comfort too.
  8. My son LOVED his swing. Wouldn't sleep anywhere else from 2 1/2 months until 6 months. We asked our pediatrician about it and he said it would do no harm. Whatever works. It bothered me way more I think. I thought I was a bad mom for letting my baby sleep in his swing. But after talking to other moms, I realized some babies sleep in car seats, bouncy seats, etc.! He just grew out of it around 6 months.
  9. Hi, my son is now 9 months and can hardly ever sleep during the day. I honestly attribute this to the swing. He can only nap in the swing. Otherwise, he is up alllll day long. My son can sleep for a long time in the swing, too, but the problem now is that he will soon outgrow it. Then, I wonder what the heck I am supposed to do. Just be aware that babies can become dependent on the swing, but honestly, I have no idea what I would have done without mine somedays.
  10. I'd say no way!!! Whats the good old saying "never wake a sleeping baby" As long as your baby is eating enough to gain the weight, then the swinging is aok!!! You are actually very lucky that your baby enjoys this. My 12wk old loves sleeping on his stomach. This is the only way for him to sleep; if he is on his back, he'll wake up within seconds. Congrats on the newest!!! It just sounds like your baby knows what he wants!!!
  11. I don't think so. For the first few months of my daughters life all she would sleep in was the swing (day and night). Even now shes 7 months old and won't nap in anything during the day except the swing.
